Nutrients and Compounds of Acai Berry

Acai Berry Facts and Information

Although the acai berry is a very small fruit, it contains many nutrients, vitamins and health-improving compounds. Based on a paper from the “Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry” from November 2006, the acai berry contains 19 different amino acids. This is 7.5 percent it’s weight while also containing 52 percent carbohydrates, 33 percent fat and a lot of dietary fiber.

The acai berry is rich in vitamins A, B1 and vitamin C, while containing essential minerals such as calcium and iron. In addition to these essential vitamins and minerals for supporting a healthy lifestyle, the acai berry is also rich in phytochemicals called anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and other flavonoids. The phytonutrients found in acai berry have powerful antioxidant properties.

Antioxidant Properties of Acai Berry

Natural processes in our bodies, such as metabolism create free radicals. Having an abundance of free radicals in your body is detrimental to our health. The free radicals are dangerous to your cells as they can damage the cell membranes as well as DNA. Acai berries contain very high amounts of antioxidants which neutralize free radicals, thus helping to support a healthy lifestyle.*

In the same “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry” from November 2006, the acai berries had the highest antioxidant activity of any fruit or vegetable tested. In addition to the antioxidant properties and activity, the acai berry also suppresses enzymes called cyclooxygenases.

Evidence of Acai Berry’s Health Benefits

There have been many laboratory studies conducted on the acai berry. Through these studies they have confirmed the high concentrations of phytonutrients. These phytonutrients have also been tested on cultured cells to show the health benefits of consuming acai berries.

However there have not been as many studies conducted with human subjects. While there are ongoing tests, only a few studies have been completed and published. One such study completed in 2008 and published in the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry,” had exciting results. The study verified that human subjects that consumed acai fruit pulp and juice exhibited a two- to three-fold increase in the number of antioxidant chemicals in their bloodstream. The human health benefits of acai berry are continued to be studied and new and exciting results continue to be reported.*
