Monitor Your Self-Talk for Success

Monitor Your Self-talk for Success

Beliefs are formed from a thought you keep thinking, or something you are told repeatedly. In the case of self-talk, we control both of these factors; the thoughts we are continually thinking and what we tell ourselves. Our internal dialogue is vital to our inner peace and happiness. It affects our businesses directly, how we treat people and who we attract into our business.

There are many great examples of the power of self-talk and its effect on an individual. Many times you can hear this in how professional athletes speak to the media and how they refer to themselves. Well before the self-help movement Mohammad Ali utilized this to perfection.

If you ever heard Ali speak to the media, he always referred to himself as “I am the greatest.” This wasn’t Ali being arrogant, it was Ali training his mind which then altered his performance. He would always fight each fight in his mind well before he ever stepped in the ring, visualizing himself as the greatest fighter.

Understand the Importance of Your Self-Talk

All network marketers can use Ali as a role model to be applied to their businesses. The self-talk occurring in your mind affects your beliefs in you, your abilities and your potential. This, in turn, alters and diminishes your belief in your abilities to be successful in the realm of network marketing.

Having self-doubt causes our brains to run continuous loops of thoughts which can be judgemental, disempowering and even depressing. When we become aware of our thoughts and realize they are hooked into a negative loop, we can correct them and cultivate new ones that empower ourselves and others.

There are continuous studies ongoing in attempts to fully understand our thoughts. Luckily for our use in this discussion, we do not have to get that involved with our thoughts. We simply need to understand the basic principle of how the two cerebral hemispheres of our brain work.

While both hemispheres produce thoughts, they do process information differently, and thus produce contrasting types of thoughts. By identifying where our self-talk originates, we then maintain the healthy relationship we need between the two sides of our brain and continue moving closer to our goals.

The right side of our brain is the seat of our imagination and intuition. It is emotional and subjective. It thinks outside the box and is highly creative. It is not fearful of what the future may bring and is open to new possibilities.

The left side of the brain is the seat of rational thought and analysis. It specializes in taking in data and weaving them into a linear story of cause and effect. It fills in the blanks wherever there are gaps in the factual data. It tries to make sense out of things, drawing conclusions that can compromise our success.

Whenever we move out of our comfort zone, our left brain kicks into high gear, often leaving a trail of judgemental self-talk. That’s why many new networker marketers quit before they recruit their first distributor; their self-talk derails them before they even get started.

With this knowledge and understanding of what side of your brain your thoughts start from, it will allow you to catch and stop the ones that hinder you, and foster the ones that promote you. Do not get discouraged if you struggle with this task at first, or start to feel overwhelmed by continually monitoring your thoughts. It takes practice and once you master it, it becomes a skill you will use to neutralize inaccurate or unproductive self-talk. In most cases you will filter your thoughts sub-consciously and not realize you are stopping the negative self-talk before it even starts.

Meditation is an excellent method for developing awareness of our mind chatter and minimizing unnecessary drama. Daily journaling also reveals patterns of thought, assumptions and mindsets we may want to alter.

We have more power over our thoughts than we think. By monitoring, challenging, correcting and cultivating our self-talk, we can learn to live intentionally. As a result, we can realize our full potential and help others do the same.
